Rob Speiden joined the Southwest Virginia Mountain Rescue Group (SWVaMRG) in 1993 and his formal tracking education began when he completed Virginia’s Tracking class in 1996. As the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) Lead Tracking Instructor, and through his Natural Awareness Tracking School, he has instructed thousands of SAR volunteers, law enforcement officers and government agents in navigation and tracking skills that enhance search efforts for missing persons. Rob continues to respond as a professional volunteer to searches as an active member of SWVaMRG, SARTI, BDSAR, MSAR, BUSAR, CSAR, ASAR and is a Search Manager 3 for the ASRC. With participation in well over 200 searches, Rob has used tracking and awareness skills to successfully find several lost persons. He was awarded Virginia’s highest Search and Rescue Award, the Lisa Hannon Award in 2007. In 2009 Rob published a book titled Foundations for Awareness, Signcutting and Tracking (FAST), the textbook for the VDEM FAST class that continues to be purchased around the world.
