I grew up in Northern England, working Border Collies on a sheep farm and mountaineering with my father, who was a member of the local Mountain Rescue Squad for many years. It was not uncommon for us to go and explore abandoned mineral mines, or spend several days backpacking on the high mountains and I loved to go to drills with him, I realize now this was the beginnings of my career in Search and Rescue!
After moving to Northeast Ohio (an area devoid of mountains!), I decided that the Local Volunteer Fire Department would be the closest thing to Search and Rescue. Over the next 15 years I worked in Ohio and then Virginia, serving for 7 years on Ohio Task Force 1 before relocating to Northern Virginia to work as a Firefighter / Paramedic with Fairfax County FRD and to join Virginia Task Force 1 as a Canine Handler and Technical Search Specialist. Additionally, I am the VP and Training Officer of Virginia Search and Rescue Dog Association, based out of Manassas.
